Heat Has an Address
Urban heat is not a temperature, it is a delay — so I stopped drawing a hot city and drew a block as an object in spacetime, where the vertical axis is hours instead of height.

The question
Heat cannot be photographed. You can photograph its effects — an opened hydrant, a window unit dripping onto a sidewalk — but not the condition itself. Because it has no image, the fact that it is distributed unevenly across New York City is hard to see, hard to argue about, and easy to forget between summers. The city measures it and publishes the measurements. So the question is not whether the inequality is real. It is how motion and spatial prototyping can make it understandable without reducing the people living inside it to points on a ramp.
Urban heat is a delay
Masonry and asphalt absorb solar energy through the day and re-radiate it after dark. The EPA states the mechanism directly: heat islands build through the day and become more pronounced after sunset, because of the slow release of heat from urban materials. Which means the infrared leaving a wall at eleven at night is carrying energy that arrived as sunlight at one in the afternoon. The wall is broadcasting the afternoon. That single sentence turned a subject into an argument: a city block is an object in spacetime, and heat is how you see its past.
The painting was always a chart
A city has been painted the same way for a century — a row of vertical masses standing on a horizon line. Relabel the vertical axis as time and nothing about the picture changes, but it stops being a view and becomes a measurement. A tower is no longer tall. It is long. That reinterpretation is the whole project and it is also the film’s central event: everything before the axis turns is a painting, everything after it is a diagram, and the turn is the film. It costs almost nothing to execute — hour rules fading in over a held frame — which is exactly why it survives a production schedule.
One saturated colour, three redundant channels
Bone canvas ground, ghosted blue-grey masses, near-black drag strokes, and vermilion as the only saturated note in the system — scarcity is what makes it land. Heat is encoded three ways at once: in material, from dry matte paint to wet and flecked; in extent, from a short mass to one running off the frame; and only then in colour. Two of the three survive greyscale and every form of colour vision deficiency, so the work reads for a viewer who cannot see the red at all. That redundancy is not an accessibility pass added afterwards. It is the art direction.
True, analogy, unknown
The fastest way to lose a room of designers is to dress a project in borrowed physics. So every proposition is filed as one of three things, and each has its own visual treatment. What is true is rendered in full paint, opaque and lit, and carries a source ID. What is analogy — the past light cone, the sense in which a hot night is longer, the dataset’s event horizon — is drawn in graphite only, sitting on top of the painting rather than inside it, and never carries a source ID. What is unknown is pencil outline on bare canvas. A viewer who never reads a caption learns by the fourth image that line means my thinking and paint means the record.
A tool, and a correction it caught
The plates were generated with a procedural painting engine written for the project — canvas ground, roughened brush masks, dry-brush and knife striation, drag strokes with paint runs, and a graphite line register, all driven from one palette. That is why five images made in one session read as one body of work, and I say how they were made because the entire project is an argument for marking how a thing was made. The framework also caught me. An early draft claimed the heat island peaks at night. Checked against the EPA, that is only true of the atmospheric heat island; the surface one peaks by day. I had collapsed exactly the distinction the work exists to defend. The plate was relabelled and the correction stayed in the case study.
What this project does not have
No residents of these neighbourhoods were interviewed. That is a limitation, not a neutral choice, and it is built into the form rather than buried in an appendix — the final movement removes the data and marks what the data cannot hold. Two decisions follow from it. Income, one of the index’s four components, is never encoded as a visual variable, because a block that is darker or shorter because people there earn less is a designed insult however carefully intended; it appears only through its consequence, which windows have air conditioners in them. And heat-related mortality is stated as text, once, held long — never drawn as dots or falling elements. The strongest image in the piece is the one I did not have to invent.
Information in motion
The project runs alongside a four-week undergraduate assignment. Students choose a condition that shapes people’s lives but cannot be photographed and build a communication system that makes it legible, under two rules: everything shown is sourced or visibly marked as interpretation, and no one invents a human being. It runs two equal pathways — one built on typography, motion and encoding, one on mark, material and sequence — and neither is the introductory version of the other. To encode temperature a graphic design student might drive a variable font’s weight axis; an illustration student might increase hatching density and pressure. Both are quantitative encodings with a stated range. Every student submits their own claims table, because the commonest failure in student work on social subjects is not weak craft — it is an unmarked analogy that quietly becomes a claim somewhere between the moodboard and the crit.
Where this stands
This is version one of a visual system, and it is honest about that. The thermal-lag curves are schematic until they are replaced with measured diurnal data. The dates inside the light cone mark eras of housing and infrastructure policy and each needs its own citation. Duration above a night-time threshold is my interpretation of the published index, not a published figure. All three are flagged on the artwork itself, in the register the system reserves for interpretation, and none of it goes public as fact before it is verified at source. A system that overstates itself is a system nobody can hand to somebody else.
