Scope
Digital painting series — 11 pieces
Outcome
A cinematic series on the animal civilization never quite tames
Challenge
We build rooms that pretend the animal is gone — bus stops, laundromats, subway platforms, fluorescent hardware aisles. The challenge was to make that buried wildness visible again without irony: put a real creature in a real human space and have it read as both absurd and completely inevitable, beautiful rather than a joke.
Opportunity
The animal-in-the-everyday is an old idea, but the contemporary, over-lit, slightly lonely settings give it a new charge. A wolf under a bus-stop light or a swan on a subway platform isn't a fable — it's a mirror. The opportunity was to use that single juxtaposition, repeated across many scenes, to build one quiet argument about instinct and the lives we've designed around it.
Strategy
One animal, one room, one cinematic frame. Lock a consistent wide format and a restrained, filmic light so every piece feels like a still from the same film — a coherent series, not a set of one-offs. Let the ordinary setting do the framing and the creature do the meaning; never explain the pairing, just stage it convincingly enough that the viewer feels it.
Process
Built as digital paintings, each composed around a single decisive light source — the sodium streetlamp, the laundromat's cold glow, a neon sign — so the animal is lit like a subject on a stage. Cast each creature to its setting until the pairing clicked (the koi rising in the laundromat's spin, the ram stranded in an aisle of inventory), then held the whole series to one palette and one lens.
Creative Direction
Treated it as a series with rules: same aspect, same emotional register, one animal per frame, no winking. The discipline was tonal — keeping each image on the line between strange and serene, so the work stays poetic instead of tipping into meme. Consistency across eleven frames is what turns a clever image into a body of work.
Outcome
An eleven-piece cinematic series with a single clear point of view, browsable as a carousel and downloadable as a full PDF set. Proof of a concept carried with restraint across many images — the kind of authored, repeatable visual world that reads as direction, not just illustration.
Lessons learned
The wildness lands hardest when the room is utterly ordinary. The more mundane the setting, the louder the animal speaks.
